Northern Virginia is one of the wealthiest regions in the US. Combined with Washington DC (and some sections of Maryland and West Virginia), it is part of the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the country (the Baltimore-Washington Metro Area).

Northern Virginia is the home of the Pentagon and hundreds of prominenet defense contracting companies. Popular local places for entertainment include the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, Nissan Pavilion, the Patriot Center at George Mason University and the new Udvar-Hazy center of the National Air and Space Museum.

Shopping plays a prominent role in the region. Tysons Corner Center is one of the largest malls in the country. Other noteworthy shopping malls include Tysons Galleria, Springfield Mall, Fair Oaks Mall, Manassas Mall, Dulles Town Center, Reston Town Center, Potomac Mills, and the Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets.

Northern Virginia has two major airports, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport. The Washington Metro (subway) and the Virginia Railway Express (commuter train) provide alternatives to driving on the region's crowded highways.
